I bet you're right. I have suspected that it might have to do with reference fields. It could be that my issue was limited to lines of source that used reference fields. We use reference fields for just about everything. And we have one big whopping dictionary for everything.

I've found the issue to be reference fields and reference files. If I have my ERP's data dictionary defined...yikes!

I have consistently had a very similar issue since well before v9.0.

It happens in LPEX when editing DDS source. And it only seems to happen when typing in the freeform keyword area beyond column 44.

For me the spinning circle comes up on the first or second character I type in that area, at which time the editor becomes unresponsive. After 15-20 seconds the editor finishes whatever process it was doing and begins to respond again. But as soon as I attempt to move the cursor... it freezes again. After another 15-20 seconds it starts responding again and I can type a couple more characters before the whole process repeats itself. It's pretty unbearable and I really have to wonder how a bug like this could possibly survive between versions of a product that costs this amount of money.

It's clear to me that the editor is somehow needing to communicate a large amount of data between it and the IBM i with virtually every keystroke. My first guess would be the real-time outline feature... which apparently you can disable for RPG but not for DDS.

At any rate, I work around it by selecting "work offline" while I edit DDS source. Then I go back to working online when I wish to save my work.

I submitted a bug report to IBM about this some time ago, but never heard back.

I have found another issue where RDI 9.0 freezes. Mine consistently freezes when I am in a DSPF source file. It seems to happen mostly when I am in LPEX editor mode, and not Screen Designer mode. My work seems to always be saved, but because it freezes, I am never sure. When it freezes, I get the windows circle (the "new" hourglass), and it never recovers. When I click on the red X to completely close the window, I get a java error screen.

This does not happen when I use the LPEX editor for RPG source, nor does it happen with DDS PF/LF source. It only seems to have a problem with DSPF source. I have not tried this with Screen Designer, so I do not know how that has the problem too.

We are on IBMi 7.1, and RDi 9.0, no service packs that I know of.

Has anyone else experienced a similar problem? I also had this same issue on 8.5, and was hoping that the upgrade to 9.0 would fix it, but the problem still exists.
