OK. So that is the reason I couldn't do it. Makes sense when you put it that way.

How about this? Preferences, LPEX Editor, Appearance, Styles, emphasis. What is emphasis? I changed the background color to orange and in the Preview pane the word"Emphasis" turned orange. I have no idea of what that is or how to do it, but that sounds like exactly what the OP wants to do?
