Thanks Paul. I do have missing ptfs so I'll start there. The problem seems exclusively related to IFS source files...my file/member projects are fine.

If you have a lot of source files that are listed then you could right-click the first item under the "IFS Files" section and create a new filter to limit the amount of listed items. I sometimes work remotely through VPN and find the general response time is less than ideal, but I use iSeries object and/or member filters to limit the amount of information coming back from the iSeries.

If you have performance problems with both "IFS Files" filters and "Object" filters I would check that the connection and installed PTFs are fine by right-clicking the connection and clicking "Verify connection". If you have missing PTFs then they will be displayed and your issue might be there.

If you also have performance problems with external tools like TN5250 (or iSeries Access) I would check the networking itself. PING in a windows command window might give you some clues, as might TRACERT which might point to the VPN server being slow rather than the iSeries connection. You might need the advice of whoever looks after the iSeries and its network cables.

That is all I can think of at the moment. VPNs are convenient, but rarely advertised as quick, so you might just have to put up with the performance issue.

Subject: [WDSCI-L] RDP "expanding filter" takes forever..

I work with a lot of source files that are stored in IFS. I access them by expanding the Root file system via Remote Systems. (I work remotely, connected via vpn). My problem is that RDP seems to continuously want to "refresh" my file list if I make any sort of change to a file or select a different file tab to look at. I don't even have to "save" anything. I can be locked out for 5 minutes while RDP shows "expanding filter" and windows shows it as "not "responding". It eventually does respond.
Anyone have any suggestions as to a fix or workaround? (RDP 8.3 and 8.5)
