Here's a quick table showing the different licensing costs over 7 years
(assuming a 20% SWMA cost and 4% annual increase after the first year).
I'm referring to the option to pay SWMA every 12 months as "Renewable".

Renewable Fixed
License Term
Year + SWMA Total License Total Savings
---------------------------------------------------
1 913.00 913.00 416.00 416.00 <497.00>
2 182.60 1,095.60 416.00 832.00 <263.60>
3 189.90 1,285.50 416.00 1,248.00 <37.50>
4 197.50 1,483.00 416.00 1,664.00 181.00
5 205.40 1,688.40 416.00 2,080.00 391.60
6 213.62 1,902.20 416.00 2,496.00 593.98
7 222.16 2,124.18 416.00 2,912.00 787.82
8 231.05 2,355.23 416.00 3,328.00 972.77

You break even around the third or forth year. By the end of the eighth
year, you've almost paid for a second license. (Of course other
considerations like cash flow, etc. can and should enter the picture
also.) It takes an analysis and decision as to where your shop is going.
We're pretty committed to the platform, so we're planning to go with the
renewable license.

*NOTE* I have no inside track as to IBM's plans regarding annual
increases. I just picked four percent because it tracks with what I seem
to recall seeing. I haven't tracked the Fixed Term License for annual
cost increases--so there's probably a quicker payback than shown, but no
guarantees.

Re: [WDSCI-L] SWMA on RDP - what has your experience been

Pete,

I am not an expert on all the licensing options. My understanding is
that
the Fixed Term License would be cheaper initially. But after a couple
of
years of paying the Fixed Term License, it would cost more than the
Authorized User License plus a couple of years of SWMA.

Thanks,
Eric
