I know this seems like a minor inconvenience, but when you have relied on the LPEX doing this for several years and suddenly it doesn't, it slows down your productivity.

In freeform, it's broken as described by OP. I'm on 8.0.3, I did not find
any new or additional settings to control this, so I'd guess it's busted.

Not sure how to do fixed format anymore, sorry.
