Why would it matter if it goes beyond 80? That's just more comment space.
I could see this error or maybe a warning if the line was going to be
pushed out past the end of the source member.

Re: [WDSCI-L] RDP 8.0.3 (Block comment)

I just tried the block commenting on a line that had code out to the 80th
position and received this message as well.

Since it is inserting the // to comment the code, it needs to push the
code to the right. If there's no room to push the code, then I think it
erroring is legit.

New shop standard to not exceed position 78? ;)

I'm not quite sure what could be done to get around this - auto split the
line? However the uncomment would have to likely leave the line split
since there would be no way for it to know if it caused a split line or
not.

I tried the block commenting, but keep getting the following error:

Text limit would have been exceeded. The operation has been canceled.

I've mapped my keys.

Alt+R to start the rectangle selection.
Hilight selection
Ctrl+B to fill Selection box.
Type in // for comment.

I'm already using the block commenting. It's so quick and easy to use.
Highlight, source > comment. Boom, done. Guess that'd be 3 steps vs 7?

I've long had a way to comment a block - use the block selection features.

1. Put cursor in comment position of first line 2. Press Alt-R 3. Cursor
down to end of block 4. Press Alt-R again 5. Right-click 6. Type L-E-* 7.
Press Enter

Ba-da-bing!

Alt-R is for selecting a Rectangle. Steps 5-7 are for putting a fill
string into whatever the selected bit is.

For free-form, insert a cursor-right after step 3 and use // instead of
the asterisk in step 6

I use this all the time to put version markers in columns 1-5 of RPG,
also.

I do like the idea of some auto-comment as has been described. I just
probably will keep using this method, but who knows?

Just a minor whinge, but the block commenting doesn't work how I want
it to.

To comment three lines I press Home, Shift+Down (x3), Shift+Left,
Ctrl+/, where I would expect to press Home, Shift+Down (x3), Ctrl+/
based on the other "selected" functions available.

Another minor issue is that it *inserts* an asterisk at column 7 on
all selected lines (in non-FREE RPG) but I would prefer it to
overwrite column
7 with an asterisk instead of moving all op-codes one character to the
right which makes things look untidy in column-specific RPG code. Has
anyone seen a preferences page somewhere for it? I can't find one.

With FREE code, it inserts // at column 8 which is fair enough, but it
still comments all the selected lines *and* the line that the cursor
is on.

This is by far my favorite refresh/fix-pack.

A couple content-assist issues have been fixed that I reported
(SE47725 and SE47784), as well as seeing an RFE I entered come to life
(seeing decimal positions on numeric fields in content-assist). Very
cool. And also - block commenting! That is so sweet.

Any major improvements between 8.0 and 8.0.3.

Looks like a lot of bug fixes, most of which I've never run into :-)
