So what he wants the backspace to do is the same thing as a left arrow, make sure it's in overtype mode, space, left arrow?

If he's only interested in his other columns not moving, the column-sensitive editing that was already suggested is the way to go.

Also, and very much a minor issue, he does not like it when using the
Backspace button to delete a character and have everything to the right of
the cursor move over. I found where I could map an action (BackSpace Left)
so that it would not delete the character and therefore not move the rest of
the line, but I'm wondering if there is a way do it with deleting the
character.
