Almost the same. With VS (or just about any other IDE I can think of) you can compile the program to run on the OS you deploy to. For i you *still* have to buy the compilers as well.

As long as you keep SWMA current, you can upgrade, but right now I am working through the WDSc--RDi--RDp entitlements and SWMA so I can get v8 and it isn't pretty. There have been product ID changes and lapses with my SWMA so IBM is still sorting it out. My request for v8 is what caused the issues. But I expect with current SWMA I should be able to get v8 with no other issues.

But look at Visual Studio. You can get basic for free or pay about the same as you do for RDi. The cost doesn't bother me as much as all of the product names and options. It gets confusing. Mostly with the product renames. Keep it as this now and it won't be so confusing.

One quick question. Now that we have our license, are upgrades at no cost?

You are kidding right ? $886.00 or use SEU for free ?
Not much of a choice.

I'll take SEU any day over paying $886 of my own money. I may be slower, but
I bill by the hour, so it is in my best interest to stay with SEU.

Thanks anyway, but NO THANKS
Tom

IBM has two ways to buy RDp
1) - many people buy it with the hardware - through the configurator or AAS
2) but contractors like you can't do that, so IBM also offers it through
Passport Advantage. You can even buy it from our website
http://www-01.ibm.com/software/rational/products/rdp/

One advantage of buying it separately from the hardware is that the SWMA
expiry notifications work properly.
I have raised the issue of no SWMA notification for purchases through AAS
with those responsible. They have been aware of it. They tried a technical
workaround but it unfortunately did not work out. They are exploring other
options to solve this problem. I assure you that this was not done to get
more money out of customers. I will let you know when I have more details
of any solution.

We are listening.

Here's a thought.....

Install RDP and then install the 5250 plugin.

You can do SEU and GUI editing right from Eclipse :-)

"The market overwhelmingly prefers SEU."

And is that because getting/installing/learning/using WDSCi RDP itself
is so confusing?

FWIW - once I got my account in the license center it only took me 5
minutes to get and install the license key - so why did Rational think
I needed a 27 page document justto do that?

Regards, Jerry
