I downloaded the trial version, installed fine without any problems on Win 7 64 bit. Not sure which JVM it used but it came up fine and seems to work fine.

Ubuntu 10.04 - no joy. here is what I tried:
1.cd InstallerImage_linux
2. ./install
3. Installation manager shows up. Starts extracting some files and then about 3/4th of the way, just stalls. Is it downloading a large fix pack from IBM's website?

Anyone know where the logs are for a Ubuntu 10.04 64bit install?

Not sure, but doesn't that imply that you're running a 32-bit JVM?
It's possible that you need to download the 64-bit Sun JDK and point
Eclipse at it.
Normal eclipse has no problem running with a 32bit JVM on a 64bit system.

Windows 7 64bit has never had a problem running a 32 bit application (well, mostly).
