Vern,

Thank you for the mentioning the menu option for the flashlight... (not sure why you used ellipses).

Sorry, I figured since we were discussing searching over source files on the iSeries I didn't need to mention which tab on the Search window I was using. You are correct, however, it is indeed the iSeries Search tab.

There is definitely a difference between Find String over a filter and the blanket search function. For instance, I just ran a search over a source file with 15 source members (the filter is really just a representation of the source file in its entirety). It took over a minute to run. Using the Search function with the same search criteria over the same file took about 5 seconds.

I can understand the difference, I'm not questioning that (or anything really), I'm just pointing out the different options and the search speeds involved.
Please note that this may not be an apples to apples comparison. One of the things that happens under the covers is that the first search of a file takes a little longer as the member list gets built. Subsequent searches can benefit from the list being built already. That's just an i5/OS thing.

I regularly run searches over multiple source files each with dozens if not hundreds of members and the searches take about a minute. You can see the progress as the tool first scans each one, then spins through the results of the scan to extract the matching entries.
