I did that for a while with vmware running on Linux, and it did work,
even though the guest os was vista. It was a very beefy PC though, and
it took a while for vista to get stable after starting up. Still, it is
possible. Just realize you need a fairly powerful host. It's also a good
idea to avoid the vmware file system (with the workstation version at
least.) There is a way to use the physical disk directly, although I
didn't go that route and regretted it. The vmware disk seems to fragment
quite badly, and there didn't seem to be a reasonable way to extend the
size once it was created.
