What I'm confused about are various concerns about having to 'pay to learn'. That is certainly a concern going into the future, but my versions of WDSC for my home setup as well as an install at work aren't likely to "wear out" any time soon.
Well, unlike WDSC which was already pretty well baked by V6 and certain perfectly usable by V7, EGL really gets significant fundamental improvements with each release. EGL in V6 looks nothing like today's product.

So, EGL in V6 wasn't useful even for learning 'for free'? (An obvious prod, I know.)

I can understand major improvement. ILE CL in V5R4 is very different from ILE CL in V4R5. The new DOx commands, CALLSUBR, *INT/*UINT/*PTR, support for data structures, multiple DCLFs -- V5R3 and V5R4 added just a few new elements but changed the whole landscape. Still, I wouldn't reject learning ILE CL without the recent additions.

In a number of past cases, learning a more primitive version just made the newer versions more impressive.

Should I avoid the avenue that I have for learning EGL for free?
