There was significant syntactical change from V6 to V7. I mentioned it, and the response I got was that they just had to do it to support some of the new stuff, like rich UI and Ajax. Pure backwards compatibility can be a curse; just read about how complex Java generics had to be in order to preserve backwards compatibility.

I guess that IBM felt that the lesser of two evils was to break backward compatibility in order to implement the new paradigm correctly. This was a major shift and not undertaken lightly, and from what I understand they don't plan on any more of these.

However, if you want specifics, I suggest you go to the source. You've met most of the players, you can probably email any one of them.
