Actually, it's more like this: for a single flat price of $10,000, you've gotten a fully loaded Humvee amphibious hovercraft, and that was your only option. Everybody got the same Humvee, and the price hasn't gone up for years. Not only that, but a lot of shops were buying P30 and P40 machines for production (with ever-dwindling hardware margins), and then piling 50 developers into one P05 Humvee.

Now, IBM is going to allow you to customize your vehicle, and you'll be able to choose the components you really use. If you do indeed use everything, you will probably pay $20,000, but the average Joe will pay more like $7500. And you'll pay a little extra for every passenger.
