Pete:

I'd like to hear what happens when with your experiments. Perhaps you can
start a thread on the topic next time go give it a try.

I have run into the dependencies you spoke of. In WDSCI 6 I found that
replacing the JVM and JRE with a Sun version kind-of sort-of worked.

It says you can but I have had little success with doing that. I use
the MyEclipse plugin and attempted to install WDSCi over the top of it
and vise a versa and was unsuccessful. There are dependencies in WDSCi
on the IBM JVM that won't allow you to install some features unless the
IBM JVM is referenced in the Eclipse environment. I tried changing JVM
references and then installing but I still couldn't pull it off.

Although WDSCi is based on Eclipse 3.2 there are still some
incompatibilities with other plugins. When I get some time, I will
attempt to do a clean install on another machine and experiment with
installation sequences and JVM's to see if I can get MyEclipse and WDSCi
to peacefully co-exist, but I haven't had the time. I think WDSCi will
always be a bit more picky about the Eclipse version, JVM's and plugins
that exist before it will use an existing Eclipse installation.

That has been my experience so far.

Neither WDSCi 6.0 or 7.0 fully supports Eclipse SWT, JFace, Eclipse
plug-in or Eclipse RCP for Java development. I have two open PMRs on

the

subject. It seems that to save space the SWT/JFace documentation and
Eclipse source is left out. This cripples PDE, at least as far as
using

extension points for plug-ins.

I'm not sure if it will help you or not, but I believe that you can
install WDSC v7 as an extension to an existing Eclipse install. I think

it's the fourth or fifth page in the WDSC v7 installer. Maybe you could

get what you want by first installing vanilla Eclipse (and whatever
plugins you need), and then adding the WDSC components as an extension
to
that.
