My 2 cents:

a. make the current 5722 WDS the delivery package for compilers
and WDSC. Put the screen design fuction into the base, not advanced.
b. move the old PDM along with DFU, etc, into a separate 5722-xxx
call it "classic" or some other nonsense word
Tier price based on server tiers - maybe $1k for very low end
c. Advanced Edition should still be for very advanced shops. If they can
afford it - let em have it.

Everyone will have to buy "a" to get compilers.
If you want the existing older stuff - pay a thousand for "b" - server
(not per seat)

IBM still has it's revenue from WDS.
Gets millions for support PDM-.
Customers wanting old stuff pay "a little more".
We can all get back to development...

I doubt if you would be able to shut the barn door with all the horses
moving to other platforms.

Exactly. Imagine the sea change in attitude if WDSC was bundled and PDM
cost $11/seat with a promise that it would be over $150/seat by 2012 and
  $500/seat by 2020.
