You missed my point. They DO NOT charge at the feature specific level (i.e.
separately charging for the screen designer). I completely understand that
dollars are siphoned off the compiler money to help pay for WDSC and it is
more "no additional charge" oriented.
Being an ISV (or business partner, whatever they call it) my copy of WDSC
_is_ "completely free" - just to clear the air.

Subject: [WDSCI-L] George Farr declares feature specific pricing on
horizonfor WDSC
Hi all,
I was at the Systemideveloper.com conference last week and was able to
attend George Farr's keynote address. In the address there were a
boatload of comments made by him that I plan on mulling over in the
next few months, but one in particular that I thought was interesting
was the approach getting money to continue WDSC development.
IBM is already charging for the the development toolset. It's called
5722WDS.
In the end our WANT to pay IBM money for features totally depends on
us seeing things that will save us time/money in the long run. George
made it very clear in his address that we "..will not be
disappointed". We shall have to see what comes out of big blue in the
next two years. BTW, I am installing my COMPLETELY FREE WDSC 7.0 as I
type this:-)
I don't know why so many people seem to think that WDSC is provided for
free. If you have the compilers/PDM/SEU on your system, you're paying for
the software already. Many of us pay a steep Software Subscription fee, and
yet also seem to be charged full price to purchase the software all over
again whenever we decide to buy a new machine.
There is nothing free about WDSC.
Regards,
John Taylor
