I suppose the pointer could be used for storing different sets of
indicators in the same program - maybe for different screens.

You'd need the %addr/based version if you wanted to define subfields 
of other types, say numeric. I can't imagine why you would want to do 
that, though.

Also, you'd need that other view of the DS if you wanted to put values

other than '0' or '1' in those character fields. (Only checked at 
compile time.)
