So what would be the purpose of all this %addr/based/etc., stuff in this
context?? Is there something that it does that allows for something else
to be done that could not be done otherwise?

Dave, if you have the extra Mapinds structure just so you can code the
multi-byte character fields, you can just code those in your INDDS
directly.  The INDDS also allows character fields.
