Also some other resources for learning EGL can be found on the following
web
site:

There are a lot of tutorials and sample code on this web site. Please
be
advised some of the documentation applies to zSeries and not the
iSeries.
Jon Sayles at IBM has been running some e-learning classes on the
subject
that have been quite helpful to me. The classes are FREE of charge. If

Jerry,

There's a tutorial that helps you with the initial setup of EGL within

WDSCi. Go to

Help -> Tutorials Galery -> Do and Learn -> Introducing EGL (a
quick-start
guide)

The first chapter helps you to enable EGL for your Web perspective.

I'm interested in exploring EGL, but do not see any links in my WDSC
install to get me started. I seem to recall that EGL is installed as a
separate component (which I may have chosen to not install during my
initial install)... or am I mistaken?

I'm running Version: 6.0.1, Build id: 20050725_1800 with all current
updates.

Can someone from IBM speak up about this, I heard(from an IBMer) that
EGL
was going to be opensourced and therefore I really do not understand
the
concern as it could / would be available in base Eclipse products
therefore automagically available in WDSC. If someone from IBM could
   comment?

EGL is already a part of WDSC. It's included in the standard edition
(with
the exception of the COBOL generation piece). I've written a whole
series
of articles on the tool in MCPress Online; last Wednesday's was on the
UI
generation capabilities.

It's a powerful tool, with a great affinity for Java Server Faces (JSF)
and
a high-level language that generates Java code and SQL access, which I
don't
find to be powerful enough for business logic. However, you CAN call
RPG
from EGL quite easily and I've been working with the EGL team to try to
get
persistence in that call mechanism.

All that being said, the unbundling of EGL from WDSC will mean that
anybody
who want to use the language will need to get approval from management
for
an additional line item for iSeries development, which is a really,
really
bad idea.

Joe

From: Dean, Robert

My mistake. I was combining what you said with what someone else said
about it being available only in AE.

At any rate, Rational's representative at the WebSphere Tech Exchange
said
that they consider i and z Business Developers strategic. I wouldn't
be
suprised if EGL is selected to be part of the WDz and WDSCi products
in
the same way that Remote Systems Exporer is included.

Jerry, read my other email. I think EGL has a TON of potential as a way
to
quickly create powerful web pages using RPG for business logic. My
problem
is that unbundling it will make it an extra-price item, and iSeries
developers have a hard enough time getting the base system approved.

Thanks Joe.

I suppose it might just be better to wait this one out and maybe, just
maybe, Toronto will come up with an F spec keyword to support HTML
output... (but I won't hold my breath).

   3. Re: WDSCI-L Digest, Vol 4, Issue 562 (Buck)

understand and use. Now I have to do it in Java, I think. I'm
still
poking through the documentation, which is extensive :-/
Well, now, this has got me thinking... Since IBM's ObjectReXX went
open-source, I wonder how easily it could be used in this area. I
need
to get back into it now to see how it could be tied in perhaps with a

basic Java "wrapper".

I spent several lunch hours and some time after hours to try to get
the
JLpex Java language equivalent of my Code400 ReXX macro running and
have
not been successful.

Note that I was considering "ObjectReXX" rather than simple ReXX.
There are reasons for going the oRexx route. (I'd love to get oRexx
working on my AS/400!)

Anyway, here's an example page that touches on interaction between
Java and oRexx:

http://jakarta.apache.org/bsf/resources.html

Search down for "The Augsburg Version of BSF4Rexx" and "Camouflaging
Java as ObjectREXX" for example. Google shows numerous hits for the
two languages together. When I see references to the two
interacting, it catches my attention because I'm pretty good with
ReXX but 'only an egg' with Java.

And ReXX has been on AS/400s from the start, so there's a chance
that developers have had experience with it. oRexx can handle
standard ReXX pretty much the same as the oRexx structure, so it
_required_ to do much differently. And the object orientation
provides a good introduction to some OO techniques at the same time.

If Java can be used simply as a gateway/wrapper, then perhaps
creating oRexx macros might turn out to be very easy.
