With all of the clients I have seen with these problems Joe (assuming that
they weren't refreshing cache each time) the problem was solved when they
set up their workspace in other than the default location.  For reasons of
central backup, a lot of folks have their C drive (or at least the default
drive for My Documents, Programs etc.) as a network drive.  The number of
small files involved in a verify seems to cause sufficient network traffic
to slow the whole process down.
