In this particular sample I could have used the prefix keyword yes.
Maybe a bad sample from me because this was probably the only DS that it
would work, the rest I will rename and want to use the Extfld
possibility.

Try this:
       D udMsgRQLvl1   E DS                  Extname(PCF0L1DS) Qualified
       D                                     Prefix('us' :2)

This should replace the L1 in your external definitions with 'us'.
