This happened to me a while back, perhaps 5.1.2, when upgrading from 5.0.x.y
...
did you let it attempt to do the Un-Install for you as part of trying to
install e.g. 6.0?

I did that, when upgrading from 5.0 to 5.1, and got the same symptoms you
report.

After 24+ hours, I decided to "kill" it -- task manager or re-boot, I cannot
recall...

Then, I did the Un-Install separately, from Control Panel, Add/Remove
Programs,
and it ran okay -- still took an hour or so ...

Then, finally, I was able to Install the new version ...
