For editing regular Java source, I have been using Eclipse (Currently using version 3.1 and will probably download some early 3.2 releases soon). Because it is only Java, it may be less cumbersome and a smaller footprint. Eclipse 3.1 allows Java 1.5 which WSDC dose not appear to allow yet - I was kind of disappointed in this because I thought about just using WDSC. Have not done any work with Java on the iSeries yet, so I may switch to WDSC for some things if it makes the job easier.

I *DO* use WDSC to edit Java source ... and I don't encounter this kind
of problem because I have to save in order to compile.
