RE: Plug ins?

Nope, that's one of the limitations.  The ability to split the same
source (with one optionally being read-only), the ability to maximize
the editor pane and still show the splits, both of those are really nice
features that we'd like to see.  Given the fundamental nature of them,
though, you have to ask for them in the base Eclipse package, however,
and then wait for them to bubble up into WDSC.

Eclipse is already at version 3, with a number of cool capabilities.  It
will be interesting to see how long it takes for an E3-compatible
version of WDSC to come out.  But even then, I don't think E3 allows
either of the features I mentioned, so it will be at least another
iteration before these show up in WDSC.
