I have 5.1.2 installed on XP-SP@ with no problems.  You might want to check
the security of the root drive, of Documents and Settings/{user} and of
Program Files.  It is possible to truly hose up XP by removing admin rights
from directories, etc.  Perhaps during the install of XP-SP2 something
unusual happened?

Are you using encryption on any of the directories involved?  Also, you
didn't change your password for either the user account you normally use or
