It looks like the best layout tool for XAML right now is Expression Blend 3 (no-charge download on MSFT for a trial period). Looks like a "goth" version of Visual Studio (fire it up, you'll see what I mean).

I haven't quite figured out how to resize controls once they're on a surface, usually end up going right to the XAML (there is an over/under view of the designer and the XAML source code).

After initial layout (which creates a Visual Studio style project), I just close it and go over to VS2008 and open the project for the code writing.

Being a web guy I've not paid much attention to XAML and WPF. But my
recollection is that the tooling around XAML is not great yet. It's like
a throwback to MFC days. That's not to say that XAML doesn't rock,
rather there aren't great tools for constructing it. Has that changed?

As far as using XAML in WPF, isn't that a core technology. It would seem
silly to move to WPF and not use XAML, no?

And all Petzold books are good! :-)

I think I have decided to switch from windows forms to WPF for my
desktop programming. The Petzold book on WPF is pretty good. One thing
I like about it is that in the first part of the book all the WPF code
presented is in a WinForms style, without XAML. What I am trying to
research now is whether I should use XAML or not. Here is a good
article on XAML: http://kentb.blogspot.com/2008/01/xaml.html
