The method all depends on  what you need 

If you need to get selective records (rows) and selective fields 
(columns), or if you need to join multiple files (tables) then SQL and 
ODBC are good methods.
If you need to transfer whole files with no selection criteria then FTP 
works, but you need an FTP server.
By folders I assume you mean the IFS. In my opinion, the IFS is very 
clumsy to use.
