In the case of the demo we saw, engineering would trigger the upload,
and via ODBC, a linked access table or possible even excel would be used
to populate an AS/400 file. I've already exceeded my expertise in even
writing this reply.

The drawing data was exported into a text file, and the PC portion of
CADdy parsed this and FTP'd the critical portions to the AS/400, where
the AS/400 portion of the system picked it up and made it into real
application data.

What would you "tap" into on a .dxf/.dwg file to get that sort of
information? How would it be ported to the 400?

I had read about Caddy a few years back. I know people who interface
CAD based systems with other AS/400 ERPs, so it's possible. Thanks
for
the info.

Peter,
We actually have the code for that groovy little product. It was
called
Caddy. It is written in 'C' but we never implemented it. Long story.
It
was
quite good with AutoCAD. It was such a new concept for our Engineering
Department, that they weren't comfortable with it. One of life's
missed
opportunities. It was saved to tape and is in 3.5.1 release level.
Just wanted you to know.

Is anyone using, or has tried using engineering based software
(Inventor
or other CAD type systems) to actually interface with System 21? I'm
looking for some magical software to assist with the creation of
Parts,
BOMS, and routes. A recent demo of Inventor looked promising for
generating part numbers and possibly BOMS.
