That's kinda what I had in mind...
My question is - if the media error is encountered how does the system load the
next tape...?
Is operator intervention required or will the Magstar 'know' enough to grab the
next available tape and mount it...?

Hey, Art. Just read your note about using the DSPOBJD command to handle the
CPF5349 media error that's killing your unattended backup. That idea will
work!

Here's a sample of the code you need (nothing fancy)...

            DSPOBJD OBJ(OSLFILES) OBJTYPE(*LIB) OUTPUT(*OUTFILE)
OUTFILE(QTEMP/QADSPOBJ) OUTMBR(*FIRST *REPLACE)

READ: RCVF DEV(QADSPOBJ) RCDFMT(QLIDOBJD)
            MONMSG MSGID(CPF0864) EXEC(GOTO CMDLBL(EOF))

SAVE: SAVLIB LIB(&ODLBNM) DEV(TAP02) ENDOPT(*LEAVE)
            MONMSG MSGID(CPF5349) EXEC(GOTO CMDLBL(EJECT_TAPE))

            GOTO CMDLBL(READ)

EOF: CHKTAP DEV(TAP02) VOL(*MOUNTED) ENDOPT(*UNLOAD)

            GOTO CMDLBL(END_PROGRAM)

EJECT_TAPE: CHKTAP DEV(TAP02) VOL(*MOUNTED) ENDOPT(*UNLOAD)

            GOTO CMDLBL(SAVE)

Is it worth doing? In my opinion, yes. Backups are like insurance - you
hope you'll never need to use them, but you'll sure be glad, if you do.

Good luck.
