We actually have been doing something like this for several years. Every
product has at least 4 product structures, each with its own route code and
bill of materials. They are P for planning route, C for costing route, B
for budget route, and S for standard cost route. In JBA terms the P route
is the base planning route and the S route is the cost route. We allow
engineering to freely adjust the P routes and keep the C routes in synch
with them during the year. The C routes are like the P routes, but adjusted
for any effect of recycle of fixed usage materials into the product. These
are used for detailed quotes during the year to assure the latest data is
used for costing the quote. For our coming year budget we programmatically
roll the C routes into the B routes so we can apply any changes expected for
the next year's budget. When the budget is finalized and we are ready to
update our standards we programmatically roll the B routes to the S routes
and then do a standard JBA cost rollup across the board. We have found this
to be extremely effective and is in fact one of the features of JBA we like
the best. Few systems can accomodate alternate bills of material to go with
alternate routes, but JBA does this quite well. With this approach
variations in labor content can also be adjusted by route with no problem at
all.

If you have detailed questions, please feel free to contact me off list.

Best,

Bruce Stern

Subject: Multiple cost decks

Is anyone using multiple cost decks or routings for the same part. Example
would be having a route 1 being standard cost, route 2 being actual costs,
route 3 being optimums and route 4 being what if. I know the software has
the ability to have different costs with cost sets on purchased, but I also
need to have different pieces per hour on the labor side. Any help would be
great. If this is not possible with routes is anyone else doing something
similar but not with multiple route codes.
