I HAVE ONE QUESTION THOUGH DOES YOUR INVENTORY (PART NUMBERS) EXIST IN MORE
THAN ONE LOCATION?
WE WANT TO DO THE BY LOCATION BECAUSE WE WANT TO DO RANDOM COUNTS BY
LOCATION RANGES.
WE HAVE 3 BUILDINGS HERE AT OUR FACILITY & THE INVENTORY (PART NUMBER)
COULD EXIST IN ALL 3 BUILDINGS AT THE SAME TIME. SO THE POTENTIAL FOR AN
ITEM TO MOVE AROUND IS MUCH HIGHER DURING A CYCLE COUNT THAN IT WOULD BE IF
WE JUST FREEZE A FEW LOCATIONS AND DO A CYCLE COUNT.

Julie,

This is the approach we have taken to accomplish a similar task with 22/INS
- Create Manual Count. We go through the "typical" steps to create the
count sheets. Once they are created and ready for update, using ODBC
drivers I have created a SQL query that pulls the count information from
INP77 and the location assignment from INP60 (stockroom details). I then
save this into an excel format and pass it on to the people responsible for
doing the inventory. They are then able to sort the information however
they would like. The only rule that they have is that they cannot alter
any part numbers or information that has been provided on the excel sheet.
Within Excel, they do a sort by location and then do the subtotal function
from the Data menu and select page break between groups. This way they can
get a page (or pages) for each location. The people doing the inventory
then update the inventory counted in the Excel spreadsheet. We save it as
comma delimited and then ftp the file to the AS/400. We then have written
a program that updates counted information in the INP77 file. We then
proceed within JBA with verifying the count, closing the count, and then
updated inventory records via the /INS menu.

We have done this on several occassions and it has worked well for us. Our
users are very please with this flexibility too.

Regards,
Carol Stone
