I would go for a "middle-ground" approach and wrapper the unconventional usage of %xlate in a subprocedure, hopefully in a "utilities" module where other similar helper procedures are coded. Maybe name the procedure something like EditString, define the prototype/interface with parameter names that reflect the usage. Then put all of the explanatory documentation into that procedure.

That way, when I see EditString used in mainline code, I don't need a lot of documentation in the mainline about an unusual use of %xlate. After seeing it once and verifying that it does what it is supposed to, I would be confident about using it as needed.

Let’s just agree to disagree on that Dave.

It is not what Xlate was intended to do and anyone new to the language would probably head to the manual when trying to make changes to it. They would then be as confused as most of us were because the parameters would appear to have been specified in error.

Did you actually run this Dave? I’ve looked at the original article
as per Chuck’s post and I can’t see how it ever worked.

Yes, and it works. It is also not a perversion of the original
design of %xlate. Rather, it is looking at %xlate from a different angle.
The only difference is that the input string is actually the template
of the output format you desire. Then, the input format provides just
the character content of the template format. Finally, the
replacement characters are the data that you wish to insert into the template. Voila!

Sincerely,

Dave Clark
