What I don't understand is when I do a simple query on FRF no records are
returned.

The content of the file is immaterial, its the files field definitions
that is used.

But is there a way to see if a particular IS defined in any reference file?

DSPFFD?

And lets say i locate this and its a different than FRF, how can i use 2
such reference files in one DDS?

If you specify REF(FILENAME) it is used as the default with
REFFLD(FIELDNAME) when no other stuff is entered. You can extend the
basic REFFLD with more options, such as explicitly defining the file and
field name you want to use (you can even modify the resultant
definition); which is documented in the DDS manual.

Think this may do

A DSPSIZ(24 80 *DS3)
A REF(FRF)
A FMORDVAL R H REFFLD(OVAL)
A FMTEXT R H REFFLD(STXC)

Assuming OVAL and STXC are defined in FRF.

I am trying to add 2 hidden fields to a subfile. The problem I am having is
the reference file used by the program is a logical that is blank

A DSPSIZ(24 80 *DS3)
A REF(FRF)

At least when I query it i get nothing. I am trying to locate how I can
refer to two fields.

Is there any way to determine in which reference file these 2 fields are?
if not, how can I define the hidden fields?

A FMORDVAL R H REFFLD(OHOVAL)
CPD5252-*
A FMTEXT R H REFFLD(OHSTXC)
