I did this, and it works.

D wFields ds
D FIELD1
D FIELD2
D FIELD3
D FIELD4
D FIELD5
D FIELD6
D FIELD7
D wOldValues s like(wFields)
D wNewValues s like(wFields)
// ...........................................
/FREE
dow *inkc = *off;
wOldValues = wFields;
exfmt FMT01;
wNewValues = wFields;
if wOldValues <> wNewValues;
....

The actual project has a screen with more than 20 fields, not all the same length or type. It seemed a no brainer to use
D wFields ds likerec(FMT01: *input)
and get rid of all the D-specs to define the ds. 'Qualified' became the default and really muddied the scene of the crime.
