Yes, I have the file as USROPN and the calling program invokes the initial opens and the closes at the end of job.

Does your file spec have the STATIC keyword in it? That may do the trick. I looked in my RPG manual, and STATIC came out in V6R1. As I understand it, keeps the files as they are through multiple calls to a function in a service program.

I have used it in cases where I want the calling program to control when the service program function files get closed, and not have the service program logic assume I want the files closed when the service program returns to its caller. I normally have the caller tell the service program function to close files when the caller is in the LR stage of processing. It helps prevent the overhead of opening and closing a file repeatedly, especially helpful when used in batch.
