Hello, all:

This thread blurs the lines between what is "ILE" and what are features of various ILE languages (C, C++, COBOL or RPG IV).

That is a symptom of another problem -- many midrange developers do not really understand the distinction between what are "ILE" features and what are features of a given language implementation (e.g. ILE RPG IV). This can lead to confusion, or worse -- poor design choices, etc.

Soon after ILE was first introduced at V2R3, I joked:

QUESTION: What does "ILE" stand for?
ANSWER: It's a Linkage Editor!

The CRTPGM, CRTSRVPGM. UPDPGM and UPDSRVPGM commands, are the interface to the ILE "binder" which is in fact a linkage editor, so this characterization is not far from the truth.

ILE has other important features, such as "Activation Groups" and runtime storage management, but at its core, ILE is mainly about *MODULEs and how to package them into *PGMs and *SRVPGMs for deployment and use at execution time.
