If you want a very efficient way, where you have complete control, you could use the technique described here:
http://iprodeveloper.com/rpg-programming/writing-delimited-file-ifs-hard-way

That article uses commas as the delimiter, but it should be easy to change the comma to a pipe in the RPG code.
