Another option is to use the Qualified keyword on your file. I prefer this over Prefix. It ensures that all I/O is done via data structures which is faster.

I have a situation here where files from a third party vendor contain

ridden(renamed) the fields in my files by way of the I specs; thusly:
// ISPECS
***************************************************************
IRim0003
I DocID DocID_3
I Title Title_3
I Folder1 Folder1_3

My question is this: Is there any way to accomplish this same end
without resorting to fixed column I specs? These stand out like a
sore thumb in an otherwise totally free-form program.

Some ideas:

Consider creating a view that changes the name (or attributes) of the vendor's file. Then, by using that view / LF in your RPG program, you wouldn't need to specify any renames at all.

How about putting the rename in a /COPY member? That way all programs needing the rename could have a common definition, but the individual programs would not have the block of I-specifications.
