Yes...you can. We are at 7.1-TR7.

We routinely pass XML from .net to IBMi database operations as a CLOB. Because we log all of the XML passed, the CLOB is most efficient, but we had been using a 32,000 byte character field.

Our app's transactions had typically originated on the .net server, but more and more frequently we've found the need to construct the XML on our i to pass as a parm (CLOB). There is even a new data-type to serve XML variables.

We used to use the XML-Toolkit, but found the method clumsy to execute and encountered poor performance. At first, we'd opted to use RPG's string manipulation abilities to construct the XML. More recently, we've begun using the XML tools within SQL. Much more efficient and less error prone to maintain as the picky need for proper apostrophe use is gone.

Can't you just pass it as a large character parm between the two programs?

When you say " pass the data as a parameter to another program ", what exactly does that mean?

What data does the parm have in it? The name of the file? The XML itself?

I have used the XML Toolkit many times to generate XML files stored in the IFS. I now have to generate an XML file and pass the data as a parameter to another program. Does anyone know how this can be done? I thought it would be an easy task (maybe it is) but I have been struggling now for several days
