You're absolutely correct that it should be 5i0.

So here's where it's at now:
-DS won't compile with 3i0
-DS compiles with 5i0 but the FETCH always returns 0 for the null indicator

-Stand-alone variable compiles with 3i0 & 5i0
-FETCH correctly sets null indicator for stand-alone variable whether it's a 3i0 or 5i0

Here's the output of that sample code on my 7.1 TR7 system. If you see
something different, maybe it's time to look at PTFs?

TBMEMBER CHAR(10) VARYING(2) ''
VALUE IN HEX '000040404040
TBMEMBER_NULL INT(5) -1
TBNAME CHAR(128) VARYING(2) ''
VALUE IN HEX '000040404040
41 '404040404040
81 '404040404040
121 '404040404040
TBNAME_NULL INT(5) -1
