But Alan didn't use LIKEREC or anything Paul so it doesn't matter. His technique (which is what I would have used) simply forces the compiler to allocate the storage for the fields in question in the named DS. Once there they can be redefined as an array. This article from 2003 outlines the technique and was written in response to almost exactly the same question as the OP posed. http://www.ibmsystemsmag.com/ibmi/developer/general/D-spec-Discoveries/

If there are any other fields in the record that are wanted their storage will simply be automatically allocated as per normal.

Assuming CTTA fields are coming from a file you do not need the field sizes,
only the names. The compiler will define them based on the previous
declaration of the file.

Define a single field to overlay the entire set of fields.
Define your array over that field.
My example assumes that CTTA01 etal are zoned. If packed, then CTTALL
length would be 90a.

I'm drawing a blank on how to define an array over several fields in a
file record.

The file has several fields defined as...

CTTA01 Decimal 17 4
CTTA02 Decimal 17 4
CTTA03 Decimal 17 4
etc..

I THOUGHT I could just define the file on an external DS definition,
as follows...
D FileDS E DS extname(FileName)

Then, just add the array definitions using the overlay keyword, as
follows...
D CTTA overlay(CTTA01) dim(10)
like(CTTA01)


Remembering that this is on a v5r1 system, the compiler rejects it,
saying, RNF7303 Subfield defined with keyword OVERLAY is too big;
specification ignored.

How are ten elements of packed 17/4 too big for a subfield?

How must I specify this?
