I think this keyword is what you need:

SFLCSRRRN (Subfile Cursor Relative Record Number) keyword for display
files
Use this record-level keyword on the subfile control record format to
return the relative record number of the record on which the cursor is
located within a subfile. If the subfile records occupy more than one
line, use this keyword in conjunction with the SFLMODE keyword to
determine the location of the cursor.

Subject: subfile record select

I am looking for a way a user can select a subfile record
that does not require an update column/field.

The applications initial subfile shows summary delivery
route data and I want the user to use up and down keys
to "select" a particular route for which detail will be shown
on a second subfile.

In other words, I want the initial subfile to act like a "Menu Bar"
