Buck is quite correct -- just changing the new_String() prototype should solve the problem. Maybe change it to 65535 just to give yourself some "breathing room".

On 6.1 or higher, you could technically make it allow up to 16mb strings -- though, I don't know if that would impact performance? But, 65535 should be reasonable at any release.
