Looking at new_String in QRPGLESRC2/HSSF_H I see that it has the
following definition:

D new_String PR like(jString)
D EXTPROC(*JAVA
D :'java.lang.String'
D :*CONSTRUCTOR)
D create_from 1024A VARYING const

You might try making your own string creator that looks like this:

D new_l_String PR like(jString)
D EXTPROC(*JAVA
D :'java.lang.String'
D :*CONSTRUCTOR)
D create_from 32767A VARYING const

jstring = new_l_String(%trim(p9enote));

I have not looked into the Javadoc for limits on the size of Java's
String class, but it's quite easy for you to just try the new procedure
and see how it works.
