If it works as designed, I simply need to be carefully, i.e. either define
the parameters as passed by VALUE or moving the content of the passed
parameter into a local variable within the procedure before initializing the
return value.
Normally we'd return the revised variable as return value. But in this case
a different return value was used and the Output parameter itself is defined
as optional parameter and it happens very rarely that the optional parameter
is passed and even less often that the same variable is passed as input and
output parameter.
I solved the problem by moving the input parameter into a local variable
before clearing the output parameter.
