Just found a Gutenberg Project version of the book I thought mentioned this - http://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/729/pg729.html - the book is Hackers, Heroes of the Computer Revolution, by Stephen Levy. Pretty much a lot of a good read, as I recall.
