They (matching records) served two purposes. One, you could have your
program check to be sure that records from the primary file were entering
the program in the proper (expected) sequence, such as order number 1, 2,
3...

The biggest advantage, though, was merging two input files into a new file
where the new file (usually a transaction file) had to be in a specific
order. Or the primary file might be a summary file (say, a customer
summary) that is being updated based upon a transaction file. There is an
MR indicator that is turned on if there is a match between the two files so
one could use MR to update the summary or NMR to create a new summary record
(new customer, you know).

Matching records are still defined in the RPG Reference Manual for V5.
Maybe just covering their bums. .-)
