Actually, I would think COBOL and RPG would be about the same in terms of
complexity and function on the i. Of course, 80+% of all i apps are written
in RPG.

Yes, and anything you can do in RPG without using The Cycle can also be
done in another language.

In fact, think about it: if you're not taking a ride on The Cycle, and
you're doing all of your database I/O through SQL, rather than native
RLA, then RPG has very little left in its favor (other than the fact
that BASIC, FORTRAN, and PL/I were all abandoned, to varying degrees,
all the way back around V3).

As Mr. Young said,
Use all of the tools in your tool box, do not discard one just because a
combination of others will also work.
