That doesn't do it.

TRUNCNBR(*NO) allows you to force old fixed-format programs to bomb on field overflows instead of truncating the high-order digits.
WIth TRUNCNBR(*YES), a free-form field assignment still bombs with "Receiver value too small to hold the result." when overflow occurs.
